How to Renew Your BLS Certification in Colorado
March 15, 2026
Renewing your BLS certification in Colorado is straightforward: you take a BLS class. The AHA has combined initial certification and renewal into a single unified course, so there is no separate "renewal" class to find. Any AHA BLS course will satisfy your recertification requirement.
Your current BLS card is valid for exactly two years from the date of issue. When that expiration date approaches, here is what you need to do.

Step-by-Step BLS Renewal Process
Step 1: Check your expiration date. Log in to your AHA account at ecards.heart.org. Your eCard displays both the issue date and expiration date.
Step 2: Book a class before your card expires. Aim to schedule your renewal at least 30 to 60 days before expiration. Popular class dates fill quickly. CPR-Professionals offers BLS classes throughout the month at both Denver and Boulder.
Step 3: Attend the class. The full BLS course runs approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours and covers all current AHA guidelines content, skills practice, and assessment. If you prefer a shorter in-person commitment, complete HeartCode BLS online first and then attend a skills-only session (approximately 45 to 60 minutes).
Step 4: Pass the assessment. Demonstrate proper CPR skills on adult, child, and infant manikins. Complete the written exam with an 84% or higher.
Step 5: Receive your new eCard. Your new AHA BLS Provider eCard is issued with a fresh two-year expiration date starting from the day you complete the class.
There Is No Grace Period
On the day after your expiration date, your certification is no longer current. Most healthcare employers will restrict your clinical duties or remove you from the schedule until you recertify. The Colorado Dental Board requires current BLS as a condition of license renewal.
Do not wait until after expiration to book a renewal class. If your employer requires continuous certification, plan ahead.
What Is New in Your Renewal Class
If your last BLS class used the 2020 AHA materials, your renewal will cover several significant updates. The 2025 AHA guidelines introduced the unified Chain of Survival, the eliminated two-finger infant CPR technique, back blows added to the choking protocol, updated ventilation guidance for trained rescuers, naloxone integration into BLS algorithms, and real-time feedback devices elevated to a Class 1 recommendation for training.

Renewal Cost
At CPR-Professionals, BLS certification is $75 (eBook purchased separately). The price is the same whether it is your first class or your tenth renewal.
Market pricing across Denver ranges from approximately $60 to $130 depending on the provider.

Renewal Reminders
Set a calendar alert for 90 days before your expiration date. This gives you enough time to browse available class dates and book one that works with your schedule.
Many employers send renewal reminders, but do not rely on them. Your certification is your responsibility.
