HeartCode BLS vs. Traditional BLS: Which Format Is Right for You?
Last Updated: March 12, 2026

HeartCode BLS and traditional classroom BLS produce the exact same certification: an AHA BLS Provider eCard valid for two years. The difference is how you get there.
Traditional BLS puts everything into a single classroom session of approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours. HeartCode BLS splits the training into online cognitive learning (1 to 2 hours at your pace) followed by a shorter in-person skills session (approximately 45 to 60 minutes).
Both are AHA-certified. Both satisfy every employer requirement that asks for "BLS for Healthcare Providers." The choice comes down to your schedule, learning style, and budget.

How HeartCode BLS Works
Step 1 - Online Learning: Purchase HeartCode BLS through AHA's ShopCPR portal (approximately $34 to $37). Complete the self-paced cognitive modules, which use adaptive learning technology called True Adaptive that adjusts difficulty based on your performance. Duration: 1 to 2 hours.
Step 2 - In-Person Skills Session: Schedule a skills session at an authorized training center. You will demonstrate compressions, ventilations, AED use, and team dynamics on manikins. An instructor evaluates your performance. Duration: approximately 45 to 60 minutes.
Step 3 - Certification: Upon passing the skills session, you receive your AHA BLS Provider eCard.
How Traditional BLS Works
You attend a single classroom session that combines cognitive instruction, video content, skills practice, and assessment. Everything happens in one sitting. The instructor teaches the material, you practice on manikins throughout the class, and you complete a written exam (84% passing) and skills test at the end.
Duration: approximately 3.5 to 4.5 hours in a single block.

Research Says Both Formats Are Equally Effective
A 2020 study published in Scientific Reports examined 832 adults and found that blended learning (HeartCode-style) produced mean compression depth of 5.21 cm compared to 5.24 cm for traditional classroom instruction, with similar skill retention at 6 and 12 months. An 18-minute focused theory module yielded the same learning outcomes as a 60-minute traditional module.
Additional research published in JMIR Medical Education in 2024 confirmed that blended learning is not inferior to traditional classroom methods while potentially reducing overall training costs.
When to Choose HeartCode BLS
HeartCode is ideal if you have a demanding schedule and cannot dedicate a 4-hour block, if you prefer to learn cognitive material at your own pace, if you already have experience with BLS and want a faster refresher pathway, or if you learn better by reviewing material independently before hands-on practice.
When to Choose Traditional Classroom BLS
Traditional classroom BLS is the better choice if you prefer learning alongside an instructor who can answer questions in real time, if you are new to BLS and want the most comprehensive guided experience, if you want maximum hands-on practice time (classroom courses typically include more practice repetitions), or if the combined cost of HeartCode is higher than a traditional class at your local training center.
At CPR-Professionals, our traditional BLS class is $75 plus the separately purchased eBook, which often makes it the more cost-effective option compared to HeartCode's combined $86 to $127.

Both Paths Lead to the Same Destination
The AHA BLS Provider eCard you receive from HeartCode BLS is indistinguishable from one earned through traditional classroom instruction. No employer, licensing board, or regulatory agency differentiates between the two. Choose the format that matches your life and learning preferences.
